When vegans are subjected to online abuse, threats, or harassment, the response is often not concern but dismissal. "What did you expect?" and "Just ignore it" are refrains many know all too well. This article explores why hostility towards vegans is so often normalised, how victim-blaming and moral disengagement help excuse harmful behaviour, and what this reveals about society's response to those who challenge deeply embedded cultural norms.

Why is it that when vegans experience online harassment, abuse, or intimidation, the response is so often a shrug? While growing awareness exists around online harm directed at women, minority groups, and public figures, hostility towards vegans is frequently dismissed as something they should simply expect.

This article explores the psychological and social mechanisms that normalise anti-vegan hostility online, from victim-blaming and moral disengagement to the perception that those who challenge dominant social norms somehow deserve the backlash they receive. The result is a troubling double standard: behaviour recognised as harmful in other contexts is often minimised, justified, or even celebrated when directed at vegans.

Speciesism is often treated as a matter of individual prejudice, but what if it runs much deeper than that? This article explores how discrimination against non-human animals is woven into the very fabric of society through our laws, institutions, language, education systems, and cultural norms. By examining speciesism as an endemic, systemic, and institutional phenomenon, it challenges us to look beyond personal choices and consider the wider structures that normalise and perpetuate the exploitation of animals.

Speciesism is often understood as discrimination against individuals based solely on their species membership. However, like racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression, speciesism operates far beyond individual attitudes. It is embedded within our institutions, social systems, cultural norms, and everyday language.

This article explores how speciesism has become endemic, systemic, and institutionalised within society. From education and law to media, agriculture, and economics, the exploitation of non-human animals is often normalised, rendered invisible, and treated as morally unremarkable. Many people who would reject prejudice against humans may unknowingly participate in speciesist systems because these practices are woven into the fabric of everyday life.

Drawing parallels with other forms of discrimination, the article argues that understanding speciesism requires looking beyond individual choices and examining the wider structures that shape beliefs, behaviours, and social norms. Challenging speciesism therefore involves not only personal reflection but also questioning the institutions and cultural narratives that sustain unequal treatment of non-human animals.
